Whole fruit or juice?

Is a whole fruit the same as a juice? This is a frequent question among those who follow a healthy diet and believe that eating fruit in its liquid state provides the same nutrients as squeezed fruit, but it doesn't. It is a mistake. Whole fruit and juice are not the same.

We recently conducted a survey on our Instagram profile to find out the preferences among @frutasfajardo fans: 80% said he preferred whole fruit.

The good news for this majority is that there are differences:

When we eat the whole fruit we also ingest fiber, which slows down the process by which sugar passes into the blood.

He tells it in this article feed. «Both 'smoothies' and milkshakes or juices are processed by squeezing, blending or crushing them. The result in the form of a drink takes the work out of the digestive system and, as a consequence, in a very short time we end up ingesting quantities that would take more time to consume if we had opted for the fruit in its original form. To understand the phenomenon with data, it is enough to point out that a 25-milliliter glass of orange juice contains about 110 calories, compared to 45 for a full piece.

Not to mention the satiating effect of chewing that occurs when choosing the whole piece of fruit.

According to a study by the Spanish Nutrition Foundation, 31.1% consume some type of juice, finding a clear trend regarding consumers by age group.

Children and adolescents consume more juice than adults and the elderly. That is, the older the fewer consumers of these beverages. In the case of children, 58.7% are juice consumers, 49.8% adolescents, 30.2% adults and 17.5% older people (65-75 years).

Is it bad to substitute whole fruit for juice?

It is not the same, but it is necessary to know what the big difference is if you intend to substitute the whole fruit for the juice (we always refer to the one made at home).

In terms of vitamins and minerals, there are hardly any big differences between juices and whole fruit. The main difference is in their fiber content.
